CELEBRATING CULTURE, COMMUNITY & TOGETHERNESS: Onam at Prosper Haven

At Prosper Haven, creating a sense of belonging means recognising, respecting and celebrating the different cultures and traditions that make up our community. This year, our home came alive with colour, flowers, traditional dress and wonderful food as our staff team, Alisha and her family came together to celebrate Onam.

What is Onam?

Onam is one of the most important cultural festivals of Kerala in South India. Celebrated during the Malayalam month of Chingam, usually in August or September, it is rooted in Kerala's harvest traditions and is associated with prosperity, happiness, hospitality and togetherness.

The festival is also linked to the traditional story of King Mahabali, whose reign is remembered as a time of prosperity and equality. Onam marks his symbolic annual return to visit his people. Today, families and communities celebrate with floral decorations, traditional clothing, music, games and a special feast.

Bringing the Colours of Onam to Prosper Haven

One of the highlights of our celebration was creating a beautiful Pookkalam - an intricate floral design made with colourful flower petals. The team worked together to create the display inside the home using vibrant pink, yellow, orange and white flowers. It was not simply a decoration; it became an opportunity to share the meaning of the tradition and experience another culture together.

Sharing Culture Through Traditional Dress

Staff embraced the occasion by wearing beautiful traditional clothing, including sarees and Kerala-style attire. Colleagues from different cultural backgrounds were able to learn from one another, ask questions, share traditions and enjoy the celebration together.

This reflected what we want Prosper Haven to be: a home where people's individual identities, backgrounds and cultures are welcomed and valued.

A Traditional Onam Feast

An Onam celebration would not be complete without an Onasadya - the traditional vegetarian feast associated with the festival. A Sadya is traditionally served on a banana leaf and brings together a variety of Kerala dishes, symbolising abundance, hospitality and togetherness.

At Prosper Haven, banana leaves were prepared and the different dishes were served in the traditional style, giving everyone the opportunity to experience another important part of Kerala's culture. The meal became more than simply sharing food: staff sat together, talked, laughed and experienced a tradition that may have been familiar to some and completely new to others.

Celebrating With the Young Person and Her Family

What made the occasion particularly special was being able to include the Young Person and her family in the celebration. At Prosper Haven, meaningful activities are about much more than filling the day. We want the people we support to experience a genuine home environment where relationships, family involvement, enjoyment and a sense of belonging are part of everyday life.

Celebrations such as Onam create opportunities for shared experiences between the person we support, their family and the staff team, while bringing something different, enjoyable and meaningful into the home.

Our Onam celebration was filled with colour, laughter, flowers, traditional clothing, delicious food and, most importantly, togetherness. We are proud to have celebrated a tradition originating thousands of miles away from Wolverhampton right here at Prosper Haven.
